Informing Sanctuary Management

What is Sanctuary Watch?

Sanctuary Watch provides three types of interactive infographic-based tools to help us better understand our sanctuaries. These tools make it easy to access information from  condition assessments, newly created sanctuaries , and other system-wide topics. Our data visualizations are developed in collaboration with data providers, along with science communicators and educators, in order to provide information that is critical to timely, effective and community-based management.

Sanctuary Watch Tools:

Tracking Sanctuary Conditions

The purpose of this tool is to provide information on key indicators for assessing conditions in a sanctuary.

  • This tool displays periodically updated status and trend data for indicators that link to priority resources and issues identified by sanctuary managers. These are used in a variety of assessments such as ONMS Condition Reports.
  • Sanctuary staff selected these indicators to align with the standardized questions in the State of Sanctuary Resources and the State of Ecosystem Services sections of the condition report.
  • Sanctuary staff and data partners co-developed these data analyses and visualizations to ensure they are relevant to sanctuary needs.

Characterizing New Sanctuaries

The purpose of this tool is to provide access to select information used during the designation process of a new sanctuary. It includes publicly available data provided in the final environmental impact statements and management plans.

Exploring System-Wide Topics

The purpose of this tool is to provide information on conservation issues as well as focal program areas including maritime heritage and socioeconomics.

  • Issues that meet several of the following criteria are considered for inclusion here: high impact to archaeological resources, high ecological impact, high economic impact, widespread geographic interest, high interest to stakeholders, and high level of urgency.
  • Future topics may include: marine economics, invasive species, marine debris, integrity of heritage resources, vessel impacts, and water quality.
